Change

Your gift has the power to help individuals meet their challenges and goals. Great Oak riders could not participate at all without donations to the scholarship fund. Most of the candidate participants already face financial and other burdens because of their disability. Donor support enables Great Oak to accept all who can benefit from services regardless of financial circumstances.

All special needs children can elicit smiles from you or that “jump for joy” feeling but occasionally there is one that really steals your heart!  This happened not long ago at Great Oak during a Summer Camp session. I first encounter a boy standing quietly in front of a horse, named Buddy. Buddy was standing patiently  while other children were busy painting him colors of the rainbow with finger paint. This child was content, however, gazing into Buddy’s eyes having a very private and silent conversation. He also held his hand in front of a nostril feeling the soft, warm breath of the horse.  I have no doubt that it was not a one way conversation as Buddy was giving him assurance and confidence. The next day brought an opportunity to ride.  The boy climbed on as if a natural, calm, happy, and content. I felt, at that moment if this could only continue, that which is just under the surface of this boy, might emerge with a little help from Buddy. So I jumped at the chance to give to Great Oak’s scholarship fund to make riding lessons available for this boy. What a little to give for such a big result in someone’s life.  It made my day!”
